Rafael Nadal v Marin Cilic Preview & Tips:
After the ouster of Novak Djokovic, the onus will be on the world number two Rafael Nadal to go the distance, but his path starts to become difficult right from this fourth round match against Marin Cilic. Because these two players have faced off nine times before this and Cilic has managed to win three of those encounters against Nadal.
One of those three was in their most recent meeting but to be fair to Nadal it was an exhibition event at Hurlingham and on grass. Another win was at the 2018 Australian Open where Cilic was 2-0 up in the final set and retired, while the third win came in 2008 in Beijing.
In more recent times, Cilic has had his struggles on the tour, as his drop to number 23rd in the world exhibits, and the lack of titles this year is telling. Because the last season in which Cilic didn’t win a title came 12 years ago. So while Nadal, who has dropped not more than four games in any set this US Open, might get pushed, it’s tough to envisage Cilic winning too much against the Spaniard.
Nadal v Cilic Prediction: Games Handicap Rafael Nadal -6: 67/100 (888Sport)
Kristie Ahn v Elise Mertens Preview & Tips:
In what will be the fifth meeting between two, Kristie Ahn will need to overturn huge odds to continue her shock run at the competition this season. Ahn, who was torn between starting a corporate job and continuing to play tennis, looks to have bought herself some time with her fourth round appearance and that would give her enough confidence to come out firing against Elise Mertens.
There’s one other thing that will give her that confidence – her most recent meeting against Mertens in which she won in straight sets at the San Jose Open. Overall they are 2-2 on head to head but the previous three matches had come in 2016. Those odds of 5/2 for an Ahn win look very, very tempting, but to make it slightly less risky, you could look at Ahn to win a set as well.
Ahn v Mertens Prediction: Ahn to win a set: 1/1 (888Sport)
Gael Monfils v Pablo Andujar Preview & Tips:
Monfils is an entertainer, sure, but when he gets on to winning runs, he is a very tough bloke to defeat. Unless you are a top player like Novak Djokovic that is. (Monfils has a total of six wins against Nadal and Federer but is 1-16 against Nole). Even against his opponent in this match, Monfils is 3-0 on head to head, but they last faced off in 2013.
In the meantime, Monfils has gone from strength to strength and while he has seen his ups and downs, he has also done well to currently sit at 13th in the world. This year alone, he has a 14-3 win-loss record on hard courts to go with a title win on indoor court. He is a heavy favourite to win this one, but the bigger question is whether he can do that in straight sets? We would like to think so.
Monfils v Andujar Prediction: Monfils to win in straight sets: 6/5 (888Sport)
Donna Vekic v Julia Goerges Preview & Tips:
While Vekic hasn’t yet won a title this year, her win-loss record of 34-16 this season makes it one of her best years in a long time. She reached the final at the Nottingham Open, semi-final at Acapulco and was a finalist at the St. Petersburg Open as well earlier in 2019. In this competition alone, she won three matches in straight sets, and should hold bit of an edge on that count over a player who is ranked seven places behind her.
What evens this battle a tad is the head to head. Goerges has won all three previous times they have faced off and that confusion is shown in the odds as well. Vekic is shown to be only slightly ahead at 19/20 while Goerges’ at 1/1, making it bit of a coin-toss for me.
Vekic v Goerges Prediction: Three sets in the match: 6/5 (888Sport)
