Stan Wawrinka v Daniil Medvedev Head to Head
Wawrinka and Medvedev met at the 2017 Wimbledon Championships first round. The Russian earned an upset win over the Swiss in four sets. It remains their only meeting on tour so far.
Wawrinka Knocked Out Defending Champion Djokovic In Round Four
Stan Wawrinka advanced to the fourth round of the US Open after defending champion Novak Djokovic retired with pain in his shoulder midway through the third set. At the time, Wawrinka led the 16-time Grand Slam winner by two sets and a break.
It seemed inevitable the World No.1 was hurting, but take nothing away from the Swiss star who produced a domineering display of power tennis that left Djokovic sprawling without answers.
In the end it was a result with two ramifications. Not only did Djokovic lose before the quarterfinals (first time since 2006), but he also opened the door for his two biggest rivals to extend their Grand Slam count by the end of this week.
For Wawrinka, he reached his 17th quarterfinal at Grand Slam level, and it will be his 5th appearance in the last eight at Flushing Meadows in his six most recent appearances. The 34-year-old is a former champion (beat Djokovic too in 2016 final) and after undergoing double knee surgery almost 18 months ago, he seems to have rediscovered his old form.

Medvedev Is ATP’s In-form Man
The Daniil Medvedev trail will take some stopping. The tall Russian arrived in New York with the most consistent run of results by any player during the North American hard-court swing and is considered by many as a genuine candidate to win the title outside the Big Three.
Medvedev finished runner-up in Washington and Montreal, before winning Cincinnati (his maiden Masters 1000 crown). And to make this achievement even more spectacular was the fact that he played non-stop tennis for three weeks on the trot.
Although Medvedev dropped a set in each of his previous three rounds, he is not showing any signs of fatigue. For a man of his size, he has incredible athleticism and is extremely agile on court.
He will almost certainly play the role of villain yet again as he continued to agitate the New York crowd in his win over Dominik Koepfer.
Wawrinka v Medvedev Predictions & Tips
Medvedev already owns one huge scalp over Wawrinka which happened at Wimbledon in 2017. The Russian was still a work-in-progress at the time, but he is close to being the perfect player. However, the scenario is different now. Wawrinka is fit again and is carrying an enormous amount of confidence in this clash. I have to side with the Swiss to end Medvedev’s streak.
Tip: Wawrinka to win: 4/5 (888Sport)
