The quarter-finals of the US Open kicks off today for both the men’s singles and women’s singles. It promises to be an exciting day with some intriguing matchups.
Last year’s runner-up and six-time US Open champion Serena Williams faces an unexpected opponent in her quarter-final, Qiang Wang. The Chinese caused a major upset in the fourth round by beating the French Open champion Ashleigh Barty in straight sets.
Williams is looking quite solid and determined to capture the record-breaking 24th singles slam of her career. They were supposed to play in a match at the Indian Wells Open earlier this year but Serena Williams pulled out of it.
Roger Federer faces a familiar opponent in Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-final match today. Federer looks solid as ever with an emphatic win over Goffin in previous round. Dimitrov has never beaten Federer in the seven meetings between the two. He will certainly have to play the best match of his career to cause an upset today.
The former world number three has dropped off in the rankings to No 78 due to a mixture of injuries and drop in form. This is his first quarter-final appearance at Flushing Meadows; he has previously reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon (2014) and Australian Open (2017).
Elina Svitolina plays British number one Johanna Konta for a berth in the semi-final. Konta made a comeback from a set down in the last round against Karolina Pliskova to push for a quarter-final spot. Svitolina is looking in good form as well with a win over Madison Keys in straight sets.
The two have faced each other four times previously, with Svitolina winning all of the encounters. Their last match came on the hard court at the 2018 Canadian Open where Svitolina won in straight sets.
Svitolina is aiming at a second Grand Slam semi-final in a row, while Konta will be hoping she can do it for the first time at the US Open.
In another men’s quarter-final, Stan Wawrinka will be up against Daniil Medvedev. The Swiss star was on his way to sending Djokovic packing before the Serb retired due to injury.
He has made the semi-final on three previous occasions at Flushing Meadows, going all the way to win it in 2016. He has had injury problems in recent years, resulting in his ranking dropping to No 24; however, he already has four wins against the top 10 this year.
Medvedev is probably the most in-form player in men’s tennis at the moment. He has had a terrific hard court season coming into the US Open, making three finals and winning one of them. This is his best showing at a slam event, and he will be hoping to go even further and he certainly has the acumen to do so.
The pair have faced each other once before at Wimbledon in 2017; Medvedev won that match in for sets.
