Rafael Nadal v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head
The pair have played each other seven times before, and Nadal has won on each occasion, most recently at Indian Wells this year in straight sets. Those wins included a previous meeting at the US Open in 2015, Nadal triumphing in a second round match, again in straight sets.
Nadal, Moving Towards Fourth Title
The number two seed has won the title here three times before, and he is on course to try for a fourth and a showdown with his old adversary, Roger Federer, in Sunday’s final.
His progress through to the fourth round had been plain sailing. John Millman of Australia was brushed aside in the first round, he had a bye in the second with potential opponent, Thanasi Kokkinakis, another Australian, scratching, and then another easy win in the third over the South Korean qualifier Chung Hyeon.
His last 16 opponent, Marin Cilic, looked on paper to be a tougher proposition , and so it proved, at least for the first two sets. Nadal took the first set with ease, only for Cilic to rediscover his form in the second. He cut down on Nadal’s angles, pushing him back with a series of powerful ground strokes, enabling him to set up accurate winners.
At one set all, the match was evenly poised but the decisive point came in the fourth game of the third set when Nadal broke the Cilic serve with a series of superb results. From that point on the Croat’s resistance was broken, and Nadal ruthlessly went on to seal victory.

Schwartzman Upsets Out-of-Sorts Zverev
Schwartzman booked his second quarter-final place in three years at Flushing Meadows with a four set victory over the number six seed Alexander Zverev, who faltered with an out-of-sorts performance.
Played on the Arthur Ashe Court with the roof closed because of the heavy rain falling outside, it was not a high quality match, with both men struggling to hold their serve.
Zverev took the first – the first time in the tournament that Schwartzman had dropped a set – but the 23-year-old German was finding it hard going, producing 17 double faults, and making 65 unforced errors in all.
The Argentine took the second and third sets, and raced into a 4-0 lead in the third, only for the German to rally briefly and break back. The decisive moment came in the seventh game, when Zverev was docked a point for a code violation for an audible obscenity on game point. That handed Schwartzman a 5 -2 lead, and effectively the match.
Nadal v Schwartzman Predictions & Tips
Zverev is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 1/12, whilst Schwartzman is priced at 23/12. Unfortunately for supporters of Schwartzman, as well as he has played so far, there is very little in Nadal’s current form to suggest that he has much chance of securing his first ever win over the Spaniard on Wednesday.
