It will be the first ever Grand Slam final for the 19-year-old, who had earlier won the Rogers Cup in her native Canada before pulling out of the Cincinnati Open. It stretches her winning streak to 12 matches, and includes wins over Eugenie Bouchard, Kiki Bertens, Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Wozniacki, Elise Mertens and now against Bencic.
Andreescu won 7-6, 7-5 in a thrilling encounter that saw the Canadian fall back 2-5 in the second set. She came back to reel off five games in a row and win in straight sets.
Things weren’t as straightforward in the first set when Andreescu needed to save a few break-points while struggling with her own knee problems. However, she dispelled those doubts, ensuring her serve remained unbroken and went on to take the tie-breaker 7-3.

Bencic got into her own in the second, breaking Andreescu on her opening serve, and while she missed repeating the dose next game, she broke once again to go two breaks up. Unfortunately for her, the lack of consistency on serve hurt as she allowed the Canadian to break back every time.
A double-fault on break point levelled the set at five apiece and broke again to win the match off the third match-point.
Earlier, Serena reminded the tennis world she continues to remain a force to reckon with after dismantling Elina Svitolina in ruthless style. She won 6-3, 6-1 to put in an early bid for her 24th Grand Slam title. She was a losing finalist at Wimbledon but her form has been rasping and it could set up an interesting encounter against the power-packed Andreescu.
Serena, who was a finalist at Flushing Meadows last year as well before she went down to Naomi Osaka in an ill-tempered final, now is in her fourth Grand Slam final since returning back from her pregnancy. She lost back to back title-deciders at Wimbledon to go with that Osaka defeat at the 2018 US Open but has looked in some of her finest touches since returning to the circuit.
