Rafael Nadal v Daniil Medvedev Head to Head
The pair have played each other before. and that was just four weeks ago in the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal. The omens are not good for fans of the Russian – Nadal won in straight sets, for the loss of just three games.
Nadal Set to Close Further on Federer Record
A win here on Sunday will not only give Nadal a fourth New York title – to add to the trophies that he won at Flushing Meadows in 2010, 2013, and 2017 – but it will also move him within one of Roger Federer’s record of twenty Grand Slams.
It is very hard to bet against him. He has dropped just one set in the entire tournament over the past two weeks, and apart from a brief spell in his fourth round match against Marin Cilic, where the Croat found a way to cut down his angles, and push the Spaniard back, he has rarely been challenged. He has had difficult moments, but he has always overcome them.
His semi-final against the twenty-fourth seed Italian Matteo Berrettini was a perfect illustration of this. Nadal dominated on serve – he did not face a single break point, and dropped just 13 receiving points. Yet, Berrettini had his chances, particularly in the long first set, which went to a tie-break, with the Italian establishing a four point lead, and setting-up two set points.
Yet Nadal saved both of them, and with the Italian’s confidence dented, he pounced to take the set, and from there the match, despite the raucous home support for his opponent.

Medvedev, with a Maiden Grand Slam Final
It is a measure of how the men’s game has been dominated by the same trio – Nadal, Federer, and Novak Djokovic – in recent times, that Medvedev is the youngest Grand Slam finalist for nine years.
Reaching the last two in this competition is just reward for another excellent US hard court season for the Russian, who has reached the final of all four major tournaments played this summer – Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati, and now New York – only the third man to achieve that feat.
No man won more matches on hard courts in 2018, and he is likely to emulate that achievement this year with his current trajectory.
His progress to the final has seen its fair share of dramas – he struggled with cramp in an earlier round, and a quad injury in his quarter-final win over Stan Wawrinka, and he has had several run-ins with the crowds at Flushing Meadows.
Yet his superior mental strength has proved decisive, as he proved yet again in his semi-final win over Grigor Dimitrov, with the Russian always able to win the big points when it mattered against the unseeded Bulgarian.
Nadal v Medvedev Predictions & Tips
Nadal is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 2/11, whilst Medvedev is priced at 67/13. The Russian has won twenty out of the twenty two matches he has played since Wimbledon, but one of those losses was a heavy defeat to Nadal. That was played over three sets in Montreal, but Grand Slams, played over five, are something at which Nadal excels, as the record shows.
If he continues his current progress, Medvedev may well become the first man from the next generation to break the stranglehold of the “Big Three” on Slams, but that will have to wait for another day. This time the title belongs to Nadal.
Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
