Karolina Pliskova v Ajla Tomljanovic Preview

Number one seed Karolina Pliskova plays Ajla Tomljanovic in the semi-finals of the Zhengzhou Open. They have played each other three times with Pliskova winning on all three occasions. Two of these meetings were this year in Brisbane and Rome respectively.

Pliskova is a former world number one, who has had a below-par season after a good run at the Australian Open, which she was able to carry to Dubai and Indian Wells, but no further. She is currently ranked world number two and looking for a good rest of the year, to redeem her season.

Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic had a good week, notably defeating Kiki Bertens and Saisai Zheng, both of whom have been in good form in recent times. Tomljanovic has not had the best of seasons, unable to gain any momentum with a string of disappointing losses, but will be hoping a continued good run here can help her carry momentum.

While Pliskova is the more seasoned player, she has had to play two matches on Friday, both her second round and quarterfinals and it remains to be seen if that has taken a toll on her. On the other hand, Tomljanovic has been in good form and the scheduling has been kinder to her. Expect a good close match with Pliskova edging out the Aussie in a tight three-setter.

Tip: Pliskova to win in straight sets: 10/11 (888Sport)

Petra Martic v Kristina Mladenovic Preview

Petra Martic plays Kiki Mladenovic in the second semi-final and will be buoyed by the 3-1 head-to-head.

Mladenovic, despite falling in the WTA rankings has been in decent form of late. She made the quarter-finals of the Citi Open and defeated Angelique Kerber in the opening match of the US Open. Additionally, her last two rounds were noteworthy victories against Caroline Garcia and Elina Svitolina, and her confidence will be high coming into the semi-finals.

Croatian Petra Martic will come into the semi-finals after an intense, two hour forty minute win against Aryna Sablenka, avenging her loss to the Belarusian in Cincinnati last month. She has had a good recovery after a slow start to the season, making the final eight at the French Open, and the fourth round at Wimbledon, resulting in a career-high ranking of 20.

Both players are coming in confident and in good form and we should have a good match. While Martic maybe the better player, Mladenovic has been in good form in the last few weeks and more so this week. This match will probably come down to who plays the big points better. Expect Mladenovic to scrape through in a tight three-setter.

Tip: Mladenovic to win: 27/20 (888Sport)
