Anastasija Sevastova v Elise Mertens Head to Head
In the two times Sevastova and Mertens have crossed paths on the tour, the Latvian has won on both the instances and currently leads by 2-0. They last met in the French Open this season, where Anastasija won in three demanding sets – 6-7(3), 6-4, 11-9.
Sevastova, Seeking Reprieve in Asia
Number 6 seed Anastasija Sevastova has had a pretty mediocre season so far. With a win-loss tally of 28-19 and one title – the Baltic Open, she has managed to cement her position in the top 20 although, she has the potential to move up higher.
Ever since winning the title in Jurmala, her form has taken a sharp hit as she went through the US Open Series with a very uneventful run. In Toronto and Cincinnati, she lost in the early rounds while at the Flushing Meadows, she fell in the third round to Petra Martic.
As the China Open runner-up from last season, Sevastova will be hoping for a good run here. She has been handed a fairly tricky draw but that isn’t something which she can’t navigate. In her career so far, she has defeated a few top players like Kiki Bertens, Elina Svitolina, Sloane Stephens, and Naomi Osaka.

Mertens, Looking to Replicate her Doubles Momentum
Currently ranked World No. 2 on the doubles circuit, Elise Mertens is heading into this fixture after what has been a phenomenal fortnight in New York. She won the women’s doubles title with Aryna Sabalenka at the Flushing Meadows while as a singles player, she reached the quarterfinal.
That was one of the best performances by the Belgian this season, who hasn’t had an eventful run since winning the Qatar Open back in February. Back then, she defeated Kiki Bertens, Angelique Kerber, and Simona Halep to lift her biggest singles title.
The drop in form which followed that exciting run in Doha took Mertens out of the top 20. However, given her recent breakthrough in New York, we can expect her to find her bearings soon and get back to her winning ways.
Sevastova v Mertens Tips & Predictions
This will be an evenly matched fixture. Mertens is heading in this match with a lot of momentum while Sevastova, despite her poor form, has the experience and skills needed to win this match. Both the players are well-rested following the American swing and are clearly ready for the Asian events.
Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match (888Sport)
