The 23-year-old Croat started her campaign in the 2019 Pan Pacific Open with a straight-set victory over Caroline Garcia. With a win-loss tally of 33-17, Vekic has been in a brilliant form this season and shows no signs of slowing down.
Most recently, she reached the quarterfinal in the US Open where she fell to Belinda Bencic. She had a similar run in San Jose too – all of this is in addition to her reaching the final in the St. Petersburg Open and the Nottingham Open.
Through the course of the season, she also registered a few wins over the likes of Kiki Bertens, Petra Kvitova, Julia Goerges, Belinda Bencic, and Johanna Konta. Clearly, Vekic is a player of great calibre and may very well go the distance here in Osaka. She is strong, fierce, and talented.

Doi, Looking Confident at Home
Misaki Doi defeated Kristina Mladenovic in the first round with 6-2, 6-1, in what proved to be one of the most clinical performances by the Japanese player. She is sailing high on confidence at the moment, given that she just reached her first WTA singles final on the tour since 2016.
She played in Hiroshima last week, where she reached the final and lost to her compatriot Nao Hibino. That was an impeccable performance, considering that Doi spent a majority of her year in futile attempts to move past the early rounds.
She was also the winner of the WTA 125K Series event in Bastad and clearly, will fancy her chances against Vekic.
