Team Europe and Team World will go head to head in this third edition of the Laver Cup from September 20 and the first two men on court will be Austria’s Dominic Thiem and Canada’s Denis Shapovalov.
This will be the third meeting between these two players with Thiem having won on both previous occasions. The first of those matches came at Acapulco last year while the second one was played out at the Montreal Masters recently.
This will be followed by Italy’s Fabio Fognini play his opening match of the year at the Laver Cup against American Jack Sock. Now, in the singles side of things, this could be bit of a mismatch, given Fognini is ranked 11th in the world and won his maiden Masters tournament earlier this year while Sock is 210th on the ATP charts.
However, Sock would look to push Fognini on hard court, much like he had done in Miami in 2015 where the American had won. Fognini got his revenge at Stockholm in 2017 to make it 1-1 on head to head.
The third match of the day, and the first match of the first evening has Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas who is enjoying a breakthrough year, taking on USA’s Taylor Fritz. And what’s interesting is that the world number seven Tsitsipas has played against him twice before this, and both times at the Boodles Tennis Challenge and lost both times!
Fortunately for Tsitsipas, his game has improved since his previous loss in 2018 and while Fritz’s service will still be a challenge, this could end up being a one-sided encounter.
The final match of the opening day has the first doubles match of this year’s Laver Cup. It’s also the first match where Roger Federer makes his appearance as he combines with Alexander Zverev to take on Sock and Shapovalov.
