Fabio Fognini v Jack Sock Head to Head
Fognini and Sock are currently tied at one-win apiece, but they have not played each other since 2017. Their last meeting was on the indoor hard-courts in Stockholm where the Italian narrowly edged Sock in three sets.
Fognini Set To Make Laver Cup Debut
Fabio Fognini will make his Laver Cup debut on Friday when he takes on Jack Sock in the second singles match. The Italian could be the man tasked to restore parity if Team Europe fail to win in their opening match featuring Dominic Thiem.
Fognini has had a memorable year in 2019. After a tumultuous start in which he suffered a handful of first round defeats, he sensationally clinched the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters in April where he beat defending champion Rafael Nadal in the semifinal. He became the first Italian to win a Masters 1000 singles title and the oldest champion in the Principality in the open era.
That result served as a catalyst in Fognini attaining Top 10 status. In June, shortly after his 32nd birthday, he cracked the Top 10 for the first time.
Although Fognini had US Open to forget after losing in the first round to Reilly Opelka, he did reach back-to-back quarterfinals in Los Cabos and Rogers Cup prior to New York. So there is plenty of hard-court form. However, Fognini has a 7-7 win-loss record on hard-courts and is reportedly battling an ankle issue.

Sock Could Count On Experience
American Jack Sock is vastly experienced at this event, and has the second-best points total in the tournament history with 10, but they have all come in doubles where he is a proven specialist.
Sock is winless in singles matches on the main tour in 2019 so far, and injuries and lack of form have contributed to his demise in the ATP rankings. The American has fallen down the pecking order and is currently ranked at No.210 in the world, but it is worth pointing out that Sock did win the biggest title of his career on an indoor hard-court (Paris Bercy 2017).
He is set to play in the Laver Cup for the third straight year for Team World and it is a sensible move for Team Captain John McEnroe to put the 26-year-old Sock in singles action on Day 1 where defeat would only count as one point for Team Europe.
Fognini v Sock Predictions & Tips
Fognini is reportedly battling an ankle issue and it is perhaps no surprise as to why he lost so early at Flushing Meadows. The Italian is a playing a man who can barely win a match in singles competition these days. Jack Sock’s last main draw win in singles seems like a distant memory and Fognini would not want to be a victim of an unwanted record in his Laver Cup debut.
Tip: Fognini to win: 8/15 (888Sport)
