Naomi Osaka v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

Puntintseva is one of the few players on the tour who holds a remarkable edge over Osaka. In the three times the two ladies have crossed paths on the tour, the 24-year-old Kazakh has dominated all of their meetings, in straight sets. They met twice this season in grass tournaments – the WTA Birmingham and Wimbledon, where Putintseva won comfortably.

Osaka, a Top Favourite at Home

Looking to reach her third singles final in the Pan Pacific Open – and going the distance this time, Naomi Osaka kick started her journey in the tournament with a bye into the second round. There, she met Viktoriya Tomova whom she dispatched comfortably with 7-5, 6-3.

The Japanese player arrived in Japan after a rather comfortable spell in the US Open series, where her performance was slightly mediocre by her standards. After winning two Grand Slams back to back, she had a humbling experience where she fell to a few promising stars in the early rounds. In the US Open, she made it as far as the fourth round while in Cincinnati, she was stopped in the quarterfinals.

However, Osaka has done a fantastic job of not letting these results take her out of the top five. Throughout the tour, she has always reached the latter rounds and played consistently well. At the same time, she has shown cracks in her defence and that’s something her rivals have exploited on numerous occasions.

Putintseva, with an Upset on the Horizon

Yulia Puntiseva’s form over the last couple of months has taken a massive toll, as she failed to move past the early rounds on a consistent basis. Her Run at the Flushing Meadows was an exception to this as she reached the third round after upsetting Aryna Sabalenka.

Looking to improve her record in the Asian swing, the Nuremberg Cup winner has so far delivered one of her best performances in Osaka. In the opening round, she defeated the Polish player Katerzyna Kawa and later dispatched Varvara Flink, in straight sets. Particularly against Flink, Putintseva was highly clinical as she lost just two games in the process.

Among her other results include a fourth-round run in the Miami Open and a quarterfinal feat in Sydney.

Osaka v Putintseva Tips & Predictions

Although on paper Putintseva has been pegged as an underdog, her pedigree for this match lie in her imposing 3-0 lead over Osaka. However, the situation here is slightly different than before – she is facing the Japanese on her home turf on hard courts. All in all, this will be an entertaining one that can very well go either way.
