Angelique Kerber v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

The two ladies have quite an impressive history behind them, having met each other 13 times on the circuit. At the moment, Kerber holds a slim lead by 7-6, and has won two of their last five meetings. They last met in the Cincinnati Open last year, where the German won in three sets.

Kerber Snaps her Losing Streak

Angelique Kerber arrived in Japan on the back of a four-match losing streak coupled with an abysmal performance in the US Open series. With a litany of first-round losses in Toronto, Cincinnati, and New York, she went through what was among her worst spells in the career.

She failed to break that jinx in Zhengzhou too, where she fell to Alison Riske in the first round. However, Osaka is where she managed to finally get some confidence and get back to her winning ways.

As the number four seed, she enjoyed a bye into the second round where she first dispatched Nicole Gibbs. Then, she met Madison Keys, who retired from the bout in the third set due to an injury. In many ways, luck favoured the former Wimbledon champion, who may have found herself in a pickle in the decisive final set.

This is the first semifinal that World No. 15 has reached since the Monterrey Open in April. Back then, she was in a good form with such consistent runs.

Pavlyuchenkova, with her Best Run of the Year

With a win-loss tally of 13-17, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova hasn’t had the best of the time on the circuit this year. In many ways, her form has been like that of Kerber, except she has faced those defeats for the entirety of the season.

A quarterfinalist in this year’s Australian Open, the Russian never made it past this stage on the tour in any of the tournaments, at least up until now. Following a horrendous spell, Pavlyuchenkova rose to the occasion in Osaka as she defeated the likes of Dayana Yastremska, Kiki Bertens, and Misaki Doi in straight sets.

Kerber v Pavlyuchenkova Tips & Predictions

Kerber has had a day’s rest for this match while Pavlyuchenkova just defeated Doi and is facing the German on the same day. This may prove to be a crucial factor in determining the results of this match. But in terms of skills and experience, the two players are definitely on equal footing. Expect this to go either way.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 10/13 (888Sport)
