Roger Federer v John Isner Head to Head

The Swiss legend leads the giant American 7-2, and that includes a 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 10-7 win at the Laver Cup in Chicago last year. Their last meeting was at the Miami Open final earlier this year, when Federer tamed the in-form 2018 champion with his mastery to capture his 101st career title, and his second in 2019 (He would later go on to add another title this year with a win at Halle Open).

Federer Unconquerable in his Own Tournament

With Team Europe leading Team World 7-5 after Day 2 of the 2019 Laver Cup, there is a possibility of it all ending by the second tie on Day 3, and the former completing a hat-trick of Laver Cups, having accumulated 13 points with two wins on the final day.

However, with Rafael Nadal enduring two tough contests last night and also featuring in the first two ties Sunday afternoon, there is a very good chance of Team World taking advantage of the Spaniard’s weariness and forcing the third, or even the final contest of the day.

And if we do get to the third tie of the day, the Swiss master would look to pick up from where he left yesterday.

Despite being tested by the mercurial Nick Kyrgios, the 38-year-old kept his poise and rebounded from a set down on Saturday to clinch the thriller 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 10-7. The two crucial points restored the lead for Team Europe, who had squandered their first day’s advantage after Team World’s Isner beat Alexander Zverev in the opening match of the day.

Nadal extended the lead to 4 points with his win over Milos Raonic, but Team World ensured the gap was reduced to 2 going into the final day, as Kyrgios partnered with Jack Sock to win the last tie of Day 2 against Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Federer, who went into Saturday’s match with an unblemished singles record at the Laver Cup, was serving to remain in the contest at 6-7, 4-5 when he got some timely advice from his long-time rival and now teammate, Nadal, which helped the World No. 3 force his way back into the contest.

“After five shots, you are winning more than him. I know it’s difficult because he reads the ball so well,” Nadal told Federer at the changeover. “Wait for the right one and then attack because he’s not missing.”

The advice worked for the 20-time Grand Slam champion as he took the second set 7-5 before winning the match tie-breaker and extending his unbeaten singles record at the Laver Cup to 5-0.

On Sunday, Federer will get an opportunity to notch up his sixth singles win in the tournament he co-organizes, but standing on his way will be the 6’8″ Isner.

Team World’s Hopes Rest on Isner

Against Zverev on Saturday, Isner, a Laver Cup regular, displayed his bouncebackability as he rallied from a set down to beat the German 6-7 (2-7),6-4, 10-1 and give Team World a lifeline.

Having lost a tough first set in the tie-breaker, the American got the only break of the match at 4-4 in the second and then there was no looking back for the 34-year-old as he demolished the World No. 6 in the match tie-breaker to hand him his first singles defeat of the tournament.

On Sunday, the World No. 20, known for his big serves and his ability to play long, gruelling matches, will look to avenge his Miami defeat against Federer. In the final at the Hard Rock Stadium earlier this year, Isner had no answers to Federer’s class in the first set, and was hampered by an injury just when he started to get into some sort of rhythm in the second, eventually losing the contest 1-6, 4-6.

If Team World has any chance of breaking Team Europe’s Laver Cup dominance, a lot will depend on Isner, who will also be seen locking horns with Federer, earlier in the day, as he partners with Jack Sock to take on the duo of Federer and Nadal in the doubles tie that will kick off the proceedings on Day 3.

Federer v Isner Predictions & Tips

Expect Isner, who is 2-3 in singles in Laver Cup, to go all out against the master to give his side a shot at the title, but given Federer’s record in the tournament and going by the outcomes of their recent meetings, the Swiss will definitely be the favourite in the contest. However, the American may not allow the match two end in two sets.
