Kyle Edmund v Cristain Garin Preview

This is the first meeting between both players in the main draw of the ATP tour. They have met once on the ATP Challenger circuit with Edmund winning in straight sets.

After a good last season, breaking into the top 15 of the ATP rankings, it has been a rather dismal 2019 for the British number one, who is currently ranked outside the top 30 in the world. The season has been one of poor form and intermittent injury concerns and as we move to the indoor and hard courts, Edmund will look to his favored conditions to resurrect a poor season.

Chilean Cristain Garin has had a breakthrough season, winning ATP 250 titles in Houston and Munich, evidencing his comfort on clay. However, the rest of the year has not been as promising for the Chilean, who is yet to prove himself on the faster hard courts and indoor surfaces.

This is as good an opening match as can be and we should see some exciting, competitive and good quality tennis. While Garin may have had the better year, one still cannot discount Edmund’s experience and comfort on the surface. Expect a three set win for the British number one.

Tip: Edmund to win in three sets: 5/2 with 888Sport

Daniel Evans v Yan Bai Preview

The ‘Bad Boy of British tennis’ Daniel Evans plays Chinese wild card entrant Yan Bai in the ATP 250 opener at the Chengdu Open.

Daniel Evans was ranked outside the top 500 at the start of the season and has had many a good run at ATP tournaments this year, and is currently ranked just outside the top 50. While he has made inroads at tournaments, apart from a final run at the ATP 250 at Delray Beach, he is yet to get to the final stages as much as he would like.

With a potential second round match against Grigor Dimitrov here, he will look to be in good form and use this match to get himself into a good place for that contest.

China’s Yan Bai has never gone past the qualifiers of a major and at age 30, has spent most of his career on the ITF Futures circuit. While he begins as a huge underdog, ranked outside the top 200 in the world, he will definitely be buoyed on by the home crowd, and it remains to be seen how the match shapes up as a result.

Despite the home crowd and conditions in his favor, it is difficult to envision Yan Bai cause too much trouble for Evans, who will look to get off to a good start and use this match as good practice for a more difficult second round encounter. The British player to win in straight sets here

Tip: Evans to win in two sets : 4/6 with 888Sport
