Elina Svitolina v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head
Svitolina and Muguruza are rather familiar opponents having played each other nine times before this. Svitolina holds the edge right now with a 5-4 advantage, having won three of their previous four matches. Although Muguruza did win the last time these two players met, at the French Open earlier this year, on hard court surfaces, it’s near total dominance by Svitolina, who leads 5-1.
Career-Best Ranking but No Title This Year for Svitolina
Elina Svitolina is ranked third in the world which is the best ranking she has ever gotten to but what’s stunning is that after winning nine titles in the past two years, she is yet to win one this year. What’s gone in her favour is her performances at the big competitions where she has been one of the most consistent player on tour.
A quarter-final at the Australian Open, semi-final in Indian Wells, semi-final at the Wimbledon, and then another last-four entry at the US Open earlier this month have all added up to give her a lot of points. Especially since she made the quarter-final of just one Grand Slam last year.
What Svitolina would love for now is a title in a competition like Wuhan Open where a plethora of top-ranked women’s stars are participating. And what better than to test herself against an opponent with whom she has had a fighting battle over the years and has been a number one at one time.

Muguruza Snaps Five-Match Losing Streak
The Spaniard’s struggles have been well-listed. A defeat in the fourth round of the French Open was followed by opening losses at Wimbledon, Cincinnati, US Open and Osaka, to make it five defeats in a row. Which is why facing up to Shuai Peng in the first round, there might have been question-marks over what might happen despite the obvious difference in the rankings and pedigree of the two players.
Muguruza would be particularly proud of her performance in the first round match, not dropping a single game on her own serve and winning the match comfortably in the end. However, beating Shuai is a very different kettle of fish from playing against an in-form Svitolina and that is where the Spaniard has struggled – overcoming the top players in the world.
Svitolina has defeated her once earlier this year in Dubai, winning 6-1, 6-2, Karolina Pliskova has won easily, and so has Bianca Andreescu. Interestingly if she can come up with any solution for Svitolina in this one.
Elina Svitolina v Garbine Muguruza Tips & Predictions
Svitolina should win this one despite Muguruza’s obvious show of form. However, one can expect a better fight from the Spaniard and if not a three-setter, we could see a bitterly-fought two-set victory for Svitolina in this one.
Tip: Svitolina to win: 4/11 (888Sport)
