Ashleigh Barty v Petra Martic Head to Head
In their one and only encounter on the tour, which came in the 2018 Miami Open, Barty sailed to a comfortable, straight-set victory with 6-4, 6-3.
Barty, on a Roll
The cricketer-turned-tennis star arrived in Wuhan to kick start her Asian swing with an impeccable, efficient win-loss tally of 45-9. With three singles titles – one on each surface, including the French Open and Miami Open, Ash Barty is one of the top favourites to win the tournaments.
Despite a rather average showing in the US Open series by her standards – a semifinal feat in Cincinnati and a fourth-round run in New York, the Aussie has managed to take back her No. 1 ranking on the singles circuit. In many ways, this doesn’t really come as a surprise, especially when we consider the remarkable season she has had where she cracked into the top 10 and eventually, became World No. 1.
Enjoying a bye into the second round, she has clearly lived up to the expectations in Wuhan so far. In the opener, she moved past Caroline Garcia with some hesitancy and in the third, she defeated Sofia Kenin convincingly with 6-3, 7-5.
Martic, in a Superb Form
Petra Martic has proven herself to be a brilliant player of tennis on many occasions this season. From her quarterfinal feat in the French Open to defeating the likes of Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova, she has had a year to be proud of.
Things are only moving forward for the 28-year-old Martic, who is on the verge of breaking into the top 20. After reaching the fourth-round in the US Open, she arrived in Zhengzhou for the Asian tournaments where she reached the final. After defeating Aryna Sabalenka and Kristina Mladenovic, she met Pliskova ultimately where she had to settle for the runner-up trophy.
Continuing in the same vein in Wuhan, she has so far knocked out Veronika Kudermetova and Mladenovic, along with Rebecca Larsson. She has looked impressive up until now and it will be intriguing to see how she fares against Barty.
Barty v Martic Tips & Predictions
While Barty will start this match as the favourite to win, we can expect Martic to put up a commanding fight backed by her recent momentum. This will be a battle of quality, agility, and grit where both the players are on an equal footing.
