Aryna Sabalenka v Alison Riske Predictions & Preview

Belarus player Aryna Sabalenka is gunning for her second of the season after having begun the year with one at Shenzhen when she takes on Alison Riske in the final at Wuhan. Interestingly even Riske is hunting for her second win of the year having bagged one on grass earlier at Rosmalen.

And this will be their third meeting with Sabalenka having won both times before this including once in the final of the aforementioned Shenzhen Open. Make no mistake, it was a fighting encounter that went down to the wire where Sabalenka took the final set 6-3. The earlier win had come in Rome last year on clay – again in three sets.

Sabalenka, who had won this title at Wuhan last year, did not give a lot of indication about this run-up to the final. A third round defeat at Cincinnati, a second round loss ouster at the US Open and then another 1-1 win-loss at Zhengzhou meant that she was entering this tournament with not a lot of form under her belt.

And then she exploded.

Wins over Kiki Bertens and Ash Barty took her to the final, and making it even more special was the nature of those victories – both in straight sets. With the verve back in her game, Sabalenka will be a player to beat.

Riske has had a good year on and off the court but focussing on just her on-court achievements, the American is on the verge of breaking into the top 30 for the first time ever in her career. For someone who was 2-4 on hard courts since her Toronto Open second round appearance, that is brilliant going.

And she would be particularly fond of the fact she defeated a load of better-ranked players than her in doing so. In fact in her last three matches, there were wins over Wang Qiang, Elina Svitolina and Petra Kvitova, of which came in straight sets.

This could well be a tough, fighting three-setter with Sabalenka holding the edge.

Tip: Sabalenka to win in three sets: 29/10 with Unibet
