Kiki Bertens v Donna Vekic Head to Head
At the moment, Vekic holds a 3-2 lead over Bertens. The two players have met twice this season and have won a match each. They last met in the St. Petersburg Open final, where Bertens won in straight sets to win her first trophy of the year.
Bertens, Struggling in Asia
Ever since starting her Asian swing, Kiki Bertens hasn’t looked as sharp as she was at the start of the year. She lost her opening matches in Zhengzhou and Osaka, respectively to Ajla Tomljanovic and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The same thing happened to the Dutch in Wuhan last week too, where she lost in the second round to Aryna Sabalenka.
Currently ranked World No. 8, Bertens was once a part of the top five and was close to a top three debut. Having won the Madrid Open and a few impressive performances in big ticket events like WTA Stuttgart, Italian Open, and Libema Open, it appeared that the number eight seed was primed to continue her ascent.
But following a rather uneventful time in the US Open series, her ranking dipped. With a litany of early losses, Bertens now faces a tough job to reach her former glory. However, in all fairness, with a win-loss tally of 43-20, she has been truly sensational and her chance at the China Open is just the opportunity she needs.

Vekic, in a Similar Boat
Currently ranked World No. 23, Donna Vekic has had a season to be proud of. With a quarterfinal run in the US Open and reaching the final in St. Petersburg and WTA Nottingham, the Croat is slowly getting closer to a top 20 debut.
The 23-year-old has been more or less consistent in terms of reaching the latter rounds in many WTA tournaments. In the process, she has also built a decent record against many top players like Petra Kvitova, Johanna Konta, Belinda Bencic, Victoria Azarenka, and others.
However, just like Bertens, Vekic has had an uneventful time in Asia so far. In Osaka, she fell to Misaki Doi in round two while in Wuhan last week, it was the Tunisian Ons Jabeur who stunned her in the opener.
Bertens v Vekic Tips & Predictions
The two players are evenly matched for this one. Both of them have been below average Asia and are more than familiar with each others’ games. Bertens, however, will carry an edge here owing to her massive winning experience and overall momentum. Expect this one to be an entertaining affair.
