Garbine Mugurza v Sofia Kenin  Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the tour.

Muguruza, Seeking Answers about her Form

Battling what is undoubtedly one of the worst performance spells of her life, Garbine Muguruza will be eager to find some answers or solace in the Wuhan Open. Currently ranked World No. 26, she has not only fallen out of the top 10, but the Spaniard also risks succumbing to lower positions in the rankings.

In her last five tournaments, Muguruza has managed to clinch only one win, which came as recently as the last week in the Wuhan Open. She defeated Peng Shuai in the first round but then, fell to Elina Svitolina immediately after that. The former top 10 player had gone without a win well since the French Open, where she delivered one of her better performances of the year – a fourth round run in the French Open.

Despite winning the Monterrey Open in April, Muguruza hasn’t been able to perform consistently well on the tour. If anything, her form has only gone down with time and shows no signs of stopping. To exacerbate the matter, she has been succumbing to a lot of lowly ranked players.

Kenin, in a Decent Form

Sofia Kenin has had a year to be proud of – she won three singles titles and bagged one runner-up trophy to pave the way for the women on the US tennis circuit. As the winner of WTA Hobart, Mallorca, and the Guangzhou Open most recently, the 20-year-old American is bound to start as the favourite in this fixture against Muguruza.

Currently ranked World No .17, Kenin reached the third round in Wuhan last week where she fell to Ash Barty. However, the week before in Guangzhou, she defeated Samantha Stosur in the final to bag her third title of the season.

With a win-loss tally of 44-19, she has been in a better form, statistically speaking, than many top 20 players. Case in point, she reached the semifinal in the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Open back to back, defeating a few big names in the process like Elina Svitolina and Naomi Osaka. She has been more or less consistent on the whole and definitely looks one of the prime contenders to break into the top 10 next year.

Muguruza v Kenin Tips & Predictions

Kenin will start this game as the favourite to win. Given the form Muguruza is in at the moment, she faces a Herculean task ahead of her to win this one. However, that isn’t to say that the Spaniard hasn’t got the skill set of experience to take Kenin out of the picture completely. This will be an interesting one on the whole.
