World number two Rafael Nadal has opted out of the 2019 edition of the Shanghai Masters that starts later this week.
Nadal had struggled with his wrist injury and even withdrawn from his Laver Cup matches on the third day of that competition and now that same injury has caused him to withdraw from this penultimate Masters competition of the season. This will mean Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will headline the tournament along with Andy Murray.

In a tweet, the organisers said:
“To our fans, it’s with a heavy heart that we announce that Rafael Nadal will be withdrawing from the 2019 Rolex Shanghai Masters due to a wrist injury.”
According to media reports, Nadal will now be looking to return to the sport for the Paris Masters, before the ATP Finals in London and the Davis Cup final. Nadal, who had won the US Open, is also gunning for a year-ending number one spot, has no points to defend in the rest of the season which should work in his favour, especially since Djokovic is the defending champion in Shanghai and will need to go deep into the competition to try and defend his points.
