Gael Monfils v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head
This is a first-ever meeting between Monfils and Sonego.
Injuries Have Stalled Monfils’ Form
Gael Monfils will play at Shanghai Rolex Masters, but once again his fitness is real concern. The flamboyant Frenchman has played out one of his best-ever seasons on tour, winning his 8th career title on the indoor hard courts of Rotterdam in February and then reaching four semifinals in 2019.
However, Monfil’s results and form stalled as injuries crept in at intervals throughout the season. First, at the Indian Wells Masters he pulled out from his scheduled quarterfinal against Thiem due to an Achilles injury and subsequently missed the Miami Masters.
The aforementioned injury ensured the veteran Frenchman recorded a lean spell during the European clay-court swing, making a lone quarterfinal in Estoril. But the 33-year-old regained some form during the North American hard-court swing, making the semis in Montreal (again withdrew from his meeting with Nadal due to injury), and the last eight at US Open where he played in an epic against Matteo Berrettini.
Had it not been for injuries, Monfils would have surely put himself in prime position at the top 8 spots in the Race To London. With that said, his back is against the wall as he aims to knock off those above him (currently 10th in the Race).

Will Sonego Take Heart From Fellow Italian Berrettini?
Lorenzo Sonego will know all too well the last time Monfils played an Italian and he will take plenty of solace of how his younger compatriot fared in one of the biggest matches of his career. Sonego has already broken ground in a Masters 1000 tournament, having made the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo this year.
This is also turning out to be a very decent season for Sonego and by far the best of his young career. He made the jump from outside the Top 100 to a career-high ranking of No.46 shortly after winning his maiden ATP tour title in Antalya.
As a result of his incredible rise in the rankings, Sonego will not contend to play qualifying matches anymore to put his name in the main draw.
Monfils v Sonego Predictions & Tips
Monfils will be a tad too good in this one. Sonego has recorded quite possibly the best-ever season of his career, but aside from the clay and a surprise form on grass, he has been average on hard courts. Given Monfils’ rejuvenation on that surface during the North American swing, he should win comfortably.
Tip: Monfils to win in straight sets: 10/11 (888Sport)
