Querrey Playing In His 13th Event Of 2019
Sam Querrey’s participation at the Shanghai Masters means that he will play in just his 13th tournament of the 2019 season (one of the fewest on tour). The big-serving American has had to deal with an abdominal issue and missed two months of action between April and June, skipping the entire European clay-court swing altogether.
He returned to court at lawns of Eastbourne where he embarked on a fine run to the final losing out to Taylor Fritz. That run sparked some renaissance as Querrey would reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the second time of his career where he was beaten by Rafael Nadal.
Querrey spent more time on the sidelines after Wimbledon, pulling out from Washington and Toronto. Although he made his return to Cincinnati, he failed to translate his grass form in North America. He lost in the first round of the US Open for the second successive year, this time to Juan Londero.
The 31-year-old’s start to the Asian swing has gone well so far as he made the quarterfinal in China last week.

It is always difficult to envisage just how Fabio Fognini will do at his next move let alone tell how he will fare in a tournament. The Italian is a neat baseliner when his game is firing, and is certainly a joy to watch especially on his beloved clay.
Fognini will arrive in Shanghai on the back of a respectable quarterfinal showing at the China Open last week. That in itself is a significant step considering he was sent packing in the first round of the US Open to Reilly Opelka.
There is a lot at stake for the 32-year-old to have extra motivation to do well this week. Fognini is 13th in the Race To London, but he is only 220 points behind 8th-placed Berrettini. Not only is Fognini looking to earn a spot the season-ending ATP Finals, but he will be keen to end the year as a Top 10 player.
Querrey v Fognini Predictions & Tips
This is the kind of match-up Fognini would lose without second thought. The Italian lost to Reilly Opelka in New York – a player with similar qualities to Querrey. But given extra incentive of London qualification, I am backing Fognini to hold off the American.
