Daniil Medvedev v Cameron Norrie Head to Head
This will be the first ever meeting between the fourth-ranked Russian Medvedev and 64th-ranked British player Norrie.
Can the Medvedev Juggernaut Roll On?
Medvedev enters this competition on the back five successive finals appearances before this. In two of them, he went on to clinch the title including the last one he played at the St. Petersburg Open while there were three other runner-up trophies to go with those couple. Two of those finals defeats came at the hands of Rafael Nadal including one at the US Open where Medvedev was praised for his fighting spirit.
Down two sets to love in that US Open final, Medvedev fought back to level the match only to lose the final set and the match in five sets. Almost as if to prove he was still hungry to go out and compete, the Russian then participated in his home competition and eased his way to a title on indoor courts.
Heading into the US Open series, Medvedev was ranked 10th in the world but after that sterling showing over the past five tournaments, he has usurped the likes of Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem to jump on to the fourth spot.

Norrie Looking to Turn Things Around After Atlanta
At the Atlanta Open earlier this year where Britain’s Cameron Norrie made it to the semifinals, it’s been a slightly underwhelming showing from him. In the six tournaments since Atlanta and before the Shanghai Masters, Norrie is yet to win two main draw matches in a row. This also includes a qualifying defeats in Cincinnati and a first round loss at the US Open.
What makes it worse to comprehend is that not too many of those defeats have come at the hands of the very high-ranked players. Mikhail Kukushkin, Denis Kudla and Gregoire Barrere have all been there to beat Norrie and that’s something that would worry a player who was looking to break into the top 30 at one stage.
The good news in this tournament has been Norrie’s form which has seen him win two qualifiers to make the main draw and then a victory against Gilles Simon in the opening round. All of these have come in straight sets. Unfortunately, all of that might not matter too much while facing up to a champion player like Medvedev.
