Roger Federer v Albert Ramos-Vinalos Predictions & Preview

Swiss maestro Roger Federer and Spanish veteran Albert Ramos-Vinalos meet for the third time in their careers in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai.  Interestingly, their head-to-head is tied at 1-1, and even more ironically, Federer’s loss to Ramos-Vinalos was here at the Shanghai Masters in 2015.

Roger Federer is a two-time Shanghai Masters 1000 winner and is the second seed here, with Rafael Nadal withdrawing due to injury. The Swiss maestro has had an overall strong year, despite some disappointments like the Wimbledon final loss to Novak Djokovic with two championship points on his serve, and the US Open injury in his quarter-final defeat to Grigor Dimitrov.

The Swiss has said that he feels back to close to full fitness and he displayed good form and fitness in the recently concluded Laver Cup two weeks ago. He was handed a difficult draw with some potentially difficult match-ups and will hope to be close to his best early on in the week.

Clay court specialist Ramos-Vinalos has not had the best of seasons, nor lived up to the results of 2017 when he was on a resurgence. However, he has done well to defeat Gael Monfils and now Marin Cilic, on these hard courts in the last two weeks. Also, his 2015 win here over Federer will be on the minds of both players.

Irrespective of the past, and the Spaniard’s first round win, unless Federer is exceptionally rusty, there should be only one result possible here. The Swiss to move on in straight sets.

Tip: Federer to win in two  sets: 13/4 with Unibet

Andy Murray v Fabio Fognini Londero Predictions & Preview

Although Andy Murray leads the head-to-head 4-3, the players last met at the 2017 Wimbledon, which was around the time Murray’s hip issues began to get aggravated resulting in a long lay-off, hip surgery and now the revival.

Both players have a lot at stake in this second round match. Murray has done well in the last couple weeks with his return to the tour, making the quarter-finals last week at Beijing, and coming back from a set down to win his opener against Juan Ignacio Londero here in the opener. While Fognini has fallen from the levels that saw him win the Monte Carlo Masters in April, he still has an outside chance at qualifying for the year-end finals in London. The Italian looked confident in his opening round win against Sam Querrey.

A battle awaits us, and one that can go either way; expect Murray’s grit to fall just short of Fognini’s unpredictable brilliance.

Tip: Fognini to win in three sets: 27/20 with Unibet

Andrey Rublev v Borna Coric  Predictions & Preview

Andrey Rublev won his first two matches against Borna Coric in late 2017-early 2018. This was followed by a breakthrough 2018 for Coric and a decline in form and injuries for Rublev.

The roles are reversed again this season; with Coric having been injured and out of form this season, and Rublev on the comeback trail since mid-season.

Croatia’s Borna Coric missed out of Wimbledon and withdrew from the second round at the US Open with injury concerns , but has been trying to get back to form with fighting results at St. Petersburg where he was a finalist, and continuing to attempt to maintain that consistency during the Asian swing. He was a runner-up here in Shanghai last year, and will look to come close to emulating that.

On the other hand, Rublev has done well to fight back from being ranked 75th this summer, so to now being just outside the top 30. He has recorded impressive wins over top ten players, including Roger Federer, and Dominic Thiem, and will look to end the year on a strong note.

An exciting clash between two of the many ‘Next Gen’ stars; Rublev looks to be in better form in recent times and can be expected to win this in three tight sets.

Tip: Rublev to win in three sets: 10/11 with Unibet

Daniil Medvedev v Cameron Norrie  Predictions & Preview

The ATP star of the ‘Late Summer’, Daniil Medvedev returns to the tour after skipping the Beijing and Tokyo ATP 500s, as he meets young British players Cameron Norrie for the first time in his career. Medvedev had a first round bye and opens proceedings in the second round.

With five consecutive finals on the hard-courts, including his first ever ATP Masters 1000 title at Cincinnati, and a great comeback in the final against Rafael Nadal at the US Open, Medvedev has cemented his place for the year-end Tour Finals in London. The hard and indoor courts for the rest of the season suit the Russian, who will look to end the year on a strong note.

Young Cameron Norrie started the year well being a runner-up to Tennys Sandgren at the ATP 250 in Auckland and reaching a career-high number 41 in the world soon thereafter. However, the rest of his year has not lived up to the promise and he has fallen to number 65 in the world. He did well to defeat French veteran Giles Simon in the opening round here.

If Medvedev is close to the form he has been in, in recent times, expect this to be a straight set win for him.
