Roger Federer v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head
There have been two matches played between Roger Federer and Albert Ramos-Vinolas and surprise, surprise, both have won a match apiece. Ramos-Vinolas’ shock win over Federer came at this very tournament in 2015 and he would feel so much more confident going into this match with that win under his belt.
Federer Returns to ATP Action
After a gruelling Laver Cup showing in which Federer helped his Team Europe clinched the title against Team World, the Swiss maestro has had nearly a fortnight off from competitive tennis. And he gets back to the top-level tennis with a bid to go the distance, taking the mantle of being the second seed at the Shanghai Masters in the absence of Rafael Nadal.
The surprise defeat to Grigor Dimitrov at the US Open would hurt – so would his fitness concerns in that match – but since then has tamed Nick Krygios and John Isner and looks fit enough to take on the challenge. With a 27-4 record to his name on hard court surfaces this year, Federer wouldn’t be too worried but it must be quickly said that in addition to his issues at the US Open he had bowed out in the third at Cincinnati.
Now Albert-Vinolas might prove to be the toughest opponent but he has beaten Federer once before. Can Federer shrug off the teeny-weeny issues he might have had back then and march into the third round?

Hard Court Issues Continue for Ramos-Vinolas
For a player to possess a 41-21 win-loss record on clay takes some doing. And with a title win at Gstaad to go with that, Ramos-Vinolas would have even felt confident going into a match against the world number three.
However, this is hard court and barring a shock semi-final appearance at Zhuhai couple of weeks ago, there wasn’t too much to write about from the Spaniard. That is, until he entered this competition in Shanghai and ripped Marin Cilic aside in his first round. He won 6-4, 6-4 and suddenly that 8-9 win-loss record on hard court surfaces doesn’t matter too much.
Ramos-Vinolas knows he could be going down anyway but he could take heart from the way Federer has played early in tournaments. He lost a set apiece in the opening rounds at Wimbledon and US Open and hasn’t generally looked at his supreme best.
Federer v Ramos-Vinolas Tips and Predictions
Federer should not have too many problems unless some fitness issue plays up but expect Ramos-Vinolas to hold off Federer for a while before he cracks.
