Daniil Medvedev v Fabio Fognini Head to Head
The pair have met twice before. Fognini won at the Cincinnati Masters in 2017, but, five months later, Medvedev avenged that defeat in Sydney.
Medvedev In Contention Yet Again
23-year old Medvedev has had a memorable year.
He has won three tournaments – the Sofia Open, the Cincinnati Masters (the biggest title of his career to date), and the St. Petersburg Open, featured in the final of four other ATP tour events, and he came within a set of claiming his first Grand Slam title, losing in five sets to Rafael Nadal in the final of the US Open. He has also twice been a semi-finalist.
In the process, he has propelled himself up the rankings, and he is now four in the world. He is already being talked about as a player with the potential in 2020 to threaten the stranglehold on Grand Slam titles of the Big Four.
He is already assured of his place in the ATP Finals next month, and is looking for another strong finish here in Shanghai. He began with a comfortable second round defeat of Cameron Norrie from Great Britain, although he was made to work harder by Vasek Pospisil in his third round match on Thursday, beating the Canadian in two tough sets.

Fognini, nine years senior, also won his first Masters title this year, beating Dusan Lajovic in the final in Monte Carlo. That was the 9th title of his career, and, in truth, he has not come close to adding to that haul, with quarter-finals in Auckland, Los Cabos, Being last week, and now here in Shanghai, his best performances apart from that win in the Principality.
Often a controversial figure, Fognini, who was ejected from the 2017 US Open for verbally abusing an umpire, was fined heavily earlier this year for derogatory remarks he made about Wimbledon. And then he clashed with Andy Murray in his first round victory, with the Scotsman upset by Fognini repeatedly shouting.
Fortunately, there were no such outbursts during his third round victory over the number seven seed Karen Khachanov of Russia, on Thursday.
