2018 semi-finalist and world No. 12, Fabio Fognini will return to Stockholm after suffering a defeat at the hands of eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2018. Fognini won his maiden title of the year at the ATP Masters Monte Carlo early this year.
Since then, he has reached the quarter-finals of the German Open, Los Cabos Open, Canadian Open, China Open and the Shanghai Masters after an easy win over Karen Khachanov who defeated him in Beijing. Fognini reached his career-high ranking of 9 this year.

He won the Challenger tournament in Bordeaux and then reached the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters and the semi-finals at the Moselle Open. Danil Shapovalov, who reached his career-high ranking of 20 early this year, reached the semi-finals of the Miami Open, Winston-Salem Open and the Chengdu Open and the quarter-finals of the Open Sud de France, ATP Rotterdam and the Lyon Open. Shapovalov was also selected for Team World at the Laver Cup. Shapovalov has won against Fognini in their sole meeting at the ATP Masters Canada last year.
Youngster Taylor Fritz made news when he was chosen to be a part of Team World for the first time at the Laver Cup. Fritz won his first ATP world tour title at Eastbourne this year after defeating Sam Querrey and reached the finals of the Los Cabos Open and the Atlanta Open. He also won the Challenger series at Newport Beach early this year.
Fritz has played against Querrey a total of five times, winning three of those matches. He has a 2-1 H2H record against Reilley Opelka who will also play in Sweden this week.
Two-time Stockholm champion, Juan del Potro, who was scheduled to play in Sweden, was recommended by his doctors to postpone his return to tennis for a full recovery. Del Potro has not played since the Queen’s Club Championships where he fractured his right kneecap.
His doctors said:
“This will allow us to continue in the next phase with a more intensive rehabilitation program but without forcing him back too soon, despite his wishes.”
While del Potro’s presence will be missed, he is expected to come back by November for an exhibition tournament against Roger Federer.
The Stockholm Open will feature a range of players who have all played against each other and will make for a competitive tournament to see who prevails.
