Stan Wawrinka v Feliciano Lopez Head to Head
The pair have played each other seven times before, with Wawrinka leading their head to head series by four matches to three. The Swiss won their first meeting in Vienna in 2007, but their last match came two years ago on the grass of the Queen’s Club, with Lopez emerging triumphant on that occasion.
Wawrinka, Injury Struggles Again This Year
Three time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka has had more than his fair share of injuries in recent years, and 2019 has been no exception as he has battled an ongoing knee problem. He reached the final in Rotterdam in February, and then was a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros,
However, it was not until the US Open again that he found his form again, producing one of the major surprises of the tournament by taking a two set lead against Novak Djokovic in their fourth round match, until a shoulder problem caused the Serb to retire.
That run to the quarter final helped push Wawrinka back into the world’s top twenty again, but then the injury curse struck again, forcing him to withdraw from the St. Petersburg Open. He subsequently chose to miss the Asian tournaments in favour of rest and recuperation.

Spanish Veteran Still Going Strong
Whilst Lopez, at 38 years old, is now at the veteran stage of a career that has so far spanned 22 years, he shows no signs of slowing down, and is still capable of producing some very good tennis, most notably at the Queen’s Club in June, where he won his 7th senior ATP singles title, and then partnered Andy Murray to success in the doubles.
Like Wawrinka, the European Open is his first competitive event since the US Open, and he reminded everybody as to what he can still do on court by beating Cameron Norrie of Great Britain in straight sets on Tuesday, taking the first set on a tie break. and then securing a vital break in the second ,which he then consolidated to see out that match.
Wawrinka v Lopez Predictions & Tips
Wawrinka is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 19/50, whilst Lopez is priced at 39/20. It has been two years since their last meeting which Lopez won, but that was on grass which is one of his preferred surfaces. On a hard court Wawrinka should win, provided his knee stands up to the test.
Tip: Wawrinka to win in straight sets: 6/4 (888Sport)
