Elina Svitolina v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head
The pair have never met each other on tour, with this being their first-ever clash.
Can Svitolina End her Title Drought?
It has been a strange season so far for the 25-year-old Ukrainian. She has quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the semifinals at the Wimbledon and the US Open. She achieved a career-high third ranking of three as well. But compared to nine titles she won in the last two seasons, she has failed to win any tournaments this year.
Her game is based around a solid, error-free game aiming to grind her opponent down. Her serve was considered to be a weakness in her game, but in the last two years, she has shown a marked improvement in the area. She was the WTA tour leader in terms of service points won last year, and it has helped her time and again when under pressure during matches.
Being the top seed at the event, she got a bye in the first round. This will be her fourth appearance in Moscow with her best showing coming in 2016, where she reached the semifinals.

Marathon Year for Kudermetova
The 22 years old Russian has done the hard yards this year to rise up in the world rankings. She was outside the top 100 at the start of the year, but the sheer number of matches she has played and won this year has ensured that she is enjoying her best ever ranking of 42. This rise has come on the back of steady performances throughout the season.
Moscow is her 26th tournament of the year, and her first-round straight-sets victory over Ons Jabeur was her 72nd match of the season.
She won her maiden title earlier this year at Guadalajara and has also reached the semifinals at three other events, Hertogenbosch, Hiroshima, and Tianjin. Despite relatively less experience playing against the top 10 players, the confidence she carries from her recent victories will stand her in good stead against the top seed.
After two unsuccessful attempts in 2014 & 2016, this is the first time she has reached the main draw at Moscow.
