Belinda Bencic v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

The pair have met five times before, with Bencic leading their head to head series by four matches to one. Their most recent encounter came at Wimbledon this year, where Bencic won easily in straight sets.

Bencic, Closing in on Fourth Career Title

Bencic has had a strong 2019. Starting the year ranked outside the world’s top fifty, she replidly progressed up the standings after winning the title in Dubai, where she beat three top 10 players along the way. She then reached the semi-finals in Indian Wells and Miami, and followed that up by making the third round at Roland Garros for the first time.

She did even better at Flushing Meadows, where she reached the semi-final of a Grand Slam for the first time, losing to the eventual champion Bianca Andreescu.

In Moscow, she struggled initially in the second round, dropping the first set to Polona Hercog, before fighting back to take the next two. Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium also offered stiff resistance in their quarter final, with the first set a real battle, Bencic winning it 10 – 8 on a tie break, before pulling away in the second.

Arguably, her semi-final with Kristina Mladenovic of France was the easiest of the three matches, with Bencic’s superior serve the difference between the two players.

However, it has been more than 18 months since the last of those victories, so she will be very pleased to be in a major final again, especially in front of her home fans.

Now ranked 40 in the world, she began her week by coming from a set down to beat countrywoman Varvara Grecheva in the second round, and then defeated another Russian in the shape of Veronika Kudermetova.

That earned her a semi-final with the Czech Karolina Muchova, which the Russian eventually one, taking the first set before she was pegged back by Muchova who levelled the match in the second after a tie break. However, Pavlyuchenkova got off to a flier in the third, and was able to close out the match easily.
