Stan Wawrinka v Pablo Cuevas Head to Head

The pair have only met once before on tour. And surprisingly, Cuevas was the winner on that occasion when he won on the clay courts of Monte Carlo back in 2017.

Wawrinka Coming Off Antwerp Final Disappointment

Wawrinka was one set away from breaking his title drought against Great Britain’s Andy Murray in the Antwerp Open final. It has been almost two and a half years since he last won a title. Swiss Indoors is the 40th tournament since Wawrinka lifted a trophy, back in Geneva in 2017.

Overall it has been a satisfactory year for the Swiss. He has battled back from a career-threatening injury that made his on-court time very limited last year. He has reached the last eight at two grand slams this year, the French Open and the US Open.

But he would need to shrug off his disappointment quickly and focus on his home tournament now. Just a day after the final, he begins his campaign in Basel. He hasn’t had the best of records at the event with his quarter-final showing in 2016 being his best so far.

He would be hoping for a comfortable victory to start his week, considering that this will be his fifth match in eight days. Wawrinka also will have to manage his workload, considering that he is just coming off a one-month knee injury lay off post the US Open.

Cuevas’ Tournament Choices Not Working Out

This season’s first half was a bit of resurrection for the 33-year-old Uruguayan. After two average seasons on the tour, he really found a new wind to his game this year. Post the Australian Open, he focused mostly on the lower level events and challengers, and it brought him a lot of success too. He won titles at Estoril and Tunis Challenger.

He also reached the final at Aix en Provence Challenger and reached the semi-finals at two more events. On the back of this strong run, he broke back into the top 50 in the world rankings.

But with relatively fewer points to defend in the second half of the season, he shifted his choices of tournaments to playing higher-level events. But this move has not worked for him so far. In the 12 tournaments he has played in since the French Open, he has failed to go past the second round in all of them. Last week he went out in the second round at Antwerp against eventual winner Andy Murray.

This will be the first time he will be playing in Basel, and it will be a big task for him to get past his formidable opponent.

Stan Wawrinka v Pablo Cuevas Predictions & Tips

Wawrinka, despite a disappointing end, had a brilliant outing in Antwerp. Cuevas, on the other hand, is going nowhere in the last three months of the season. With the support of the home crowd behind him, the Swiss would have far too much quality in his game for the Uruguayan to cause any major trouble.

Tip: Wawrinka to win in straight sets: 8/11 with 888Sport
