They have played each other just once before this with Fucsovics, the 67th-ranked player having beaten Khachanov in that Davis Cup tie of 2017.
Disappointing Year for Khachanov So Far
With three titles for Khachanov last year including the Paris Masters where he bettered Novak Djokovic in the final, a lot more was expected from the Russian this season. Unfortunately, nothing’s come to fruition for him, with not a single title won so far.
In fact, why title victories, he is yet to make it to the final of any tournament this season, with his best performances coming in Montreal and Beijing where he made semifinal exits. Even more recently, losses to Fabio Fognini at Shanghai – a player who has himself struggled apart from on clay – and to Andreas Seppi at Moscow would have hurt.

Fucsovics Has Issues of His Own
Fucsovics is a qualifier at Vienna, having beaten an upcoming player in Egor Gerasimov in one of the matches before romping past Lorenzo Sonego in his opener in straight sets.
These three wins – including two at the qualifying – would come as bit of a relief for the Hungarian, after having entered the tournament on the back of three straight losses. In fact this year, having played in qualifying in just three tournaments in all, he has had a 24-27 win-loss record.
The last time that Fucsovics won two matches in a row in the main draw of a tournament was in Stuttgart on grass, and coming on a back of a fairly decent first half of the year, this has been a sour disappointment.

Now while Khachanov has had form issues of his own, he is up against a player whose form has been even scratchier than his own. Khachanov won’t just be a favourite but on his favourite surface should win the match in two straight sets to make it to the quarter-finals.
