Roger Federer v Radu Albot Head to Head
The pair have met once before, in the first round of the Miami Masters earlier this year. Albot took the first set, but Federer hit back to take the next two, winning the match and, ultimately, the tournament.
Federer, Defending Champion and Multiple Winner in Basel
Home favourite Federer virtually owns this event. He has won it nine times in the past, including both of the past two years, and has been runner-up on a further five occasions, with his first final coming as far back as the year 2000, when he lost to the Swede, Thomas Enqvist.
Now 38, there were some who thought that this might be the last year on tour for the 20-time Grand Slam winner, but he is already making plans for 2020, and has announced he wants to play for Switzerland at the Tokyo Olympics.
He has already won 3 ATP titles this year – in Dubai, Miami, and Halle – and got his quest for a fourth, and tenth in this event, off in fine style, with a comprehensive defeat of the German Peter Gojowczyk on Monday night, dropping just three games in his victory.

Albot, Moldovan History Maker
Albot made history earlier this year when he became the first Moldovan player ever to win a senior singles title, defeating Dan Evans in the final at Delray Beach.
That now ranks in the record books alongside the Doubles titles he won in 2015 with partner Dusan Lajovic at the Istanbul Open, and the 7 Challenger and 14 ITF Futures events he has also won, the most recent of which came in Liuzhou, China, last October.
Apart from that victory in America in February, he has reached three semi-finals this year – in Montpellier, Geneva, and Los Cabos, Mexico.
In his first round on Tuesday, he was pitted against his erstwhile Doubles partner, Lajovic, and after dropping the first set to the Monte Carlo Masters finalist, he came back in style to win the next two and book his meeting with Federer.
Federer v Albot Predictions & Tips
Federer is the shortest of all odds on favourite to win this match at 1/20, whilst Albot is priced at 133/10. The Moldovan may have pushed the Swiss player hard in Miami, but this match is taking place in Federer’s backyard, and is in a tournament that he virtually owns. There is likely to be only one winner.
Tip: Federer to win in straight sets: 1/5 at 888Sport
