Stan Wawrinka v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head
The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 34 year old Swiss, and the American, 13 years his junior.
Wawrinka, Beaten Finalist in Antwerp
Wawrinka comes into this tournament fresh from the final of the European Open in Antwerp on Sunday, where he was beaten by a resurgent Andy Murray, despite leading by a set and a break at one stage in the match. Although he also reached the final in Rotterdam earlier this year, losing to Gael Monfils, his performance in Belgium last week was arguably the closest he has come this year to adding to his haul of 16 ATP career title (including three Grand Slams).
On the positive side, at least he is healthy and fit again, and, after all his injury problems in recent years, that is something to be appreciated.
He got his campaign in Basel off to a comfortable start on Wednesday, easing past Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay in straight sets, a break of service in each set enough to get the job done.

Tiafoe, Failed to Build on Last Year’s Promise
Tiafoe, having won his first ATP title in Delray Beach last February, was hoping to really build on that potential in 2019, but, in truth, it has been something of a disappointing year for the American.
It began well enough though. He got to the quarter-finals in Melbourne, and then again in Miami and Estoril, but he had a terrible sequence of performances over the summer, losing six out of seven singles matches he played at one point.
That not only allowed Taylor Fritz to overtake him as America’s second ranked player, but both Reilly Opelka and Sam Querry are above him in the standings as well.
He managed to snap his losing streak by getting to the quarter-finals at Winston Salem, but then suffered early defeats at Flushing Meadows, Beijing and Shanghai. Last week he got to the quarter final in Antwerp, but was beaten by the Italian wildcard, Jannik Sinner.
Given his recent struggles for form, his straight sets win over Dan Evans of Great Britain in the first round here on Wednesday was a much needed confidence booster.
Wawrinka v Tiafoe Predictions & Tips
Wawrinka is the odds on favourite to win this match at 39/100, whilst Tiafoe is priced at 221/100. Whilst Wawrinka has struggled with injuries in recent years, he is showing signs of his old form and playing in front of the Swiss crowd, he should have too much for a man who has been struggling for form recently.
Tip: Wawrinka to win in straight sets: 2/1 1/5 at 888Sport
