Roger Federer v Stefanos Tsitsipas Head to Head
This will be the fourth time these two will be facing off although they were supposed to play one other time earlier this year in Rome but Federer had pulled out of that encounter because of fitness issues. All three of their matches came in 2019, with Federer winning the Dubai title by beating the Greek in the final in their most recent match. This was preceded by that famous Australian Open match in the fourth round where where Tsitsipas had come back from a set down to clinch the encounter.
Tsitsipas Makes Back to Back Comeback Wins
Tsitsipas has already had a very good 2019, having won in Marseille and Estoril, and reaching the finals in Madrid and Beijing, earlier this month. He has also made semi-final appearances at the Australian Open, in the Masters events in Dubai and Shanghai, and also at the Washington Open.
Now he has a very good chance of adding to that list here in Basel. He had a comfortable first round victory over the Spaniard Albert Ramos Vinolas, beating him in straight sets on Tuesday. However, the challenger of the Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis in the second round on Thursday proved to be a stiffer one – he dropped the first set on a tie-break, before finding his rhythm and range to win the next two comfortably.
Tsitsipas was under the pump in his quarter-final match here against Filip Krajinovic but for the second time in a row, came back from a set down to seal the semifinal berth.

Federer in for a Battle
Federer has won this tournament no fewer than ten times in the past, and is the defending champion from the last two years. The draw has also looked to be in his favour having played a day earlier than his main rivals, so he has 24 hours extra rest ahead of the quarter finals.
To add to that, the withdrawal of Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinal would have helped too.
Not that he has been put under much pressure so far this week. He comprehensively defeated the German Peter Gojowczyk on Monday night, dropping just three games in his victory. And then, on Wednesday night, it took him barely an hour to beat the Moldovan Radu Albot 6-0, 6-4 in a highly entertaining match.
Federer’s serve was utterly dominant in that match and, for a 38-year-old, he showed remarkable speed about the court, maintaining a superior level of fitness despite his advanced years.
Roger Federer v Stefanos Tsitsipas Predictions & Tips
Federer is an outright favourite to win this one with an offer of 5/18 and against an opponent who has tested him in the past those are rather short odds. We will still back Federer to win it but can be do it in straight sets?
