Dimitrov Looking to Gain Lost Ground
Exactly a year ago, Dimitrov was world number 10 in the rankings. After winning four titles in 2017 and being as high as number three in the rankings last year, this season has not gone according to the plan for the Russian. He has not reached a single final this year. His win-loss record this year is modest 21-20.
Injuries and loss of form have meant that he was ranked as low as 78 a couple of months ago. But his spectacular US Open run has been the shining light in an otherwise mediocre campaign. The 29-year-old reached the Semi-finals at the Flushing Meadows, taking out Roger Federer on the way. He came up against fellow Russian Medvedev in the semis and bowed out in straight sets.
The US Open result proved to be a false dawn as Dimitrov has failed to capitalize on the tournaments since then. He has been unable to go past the first two rounds in all four events since the US Open. Currently ranked number 29 in the world, the Russian will be looking to take inspiration from an impressive Indoors record that he has. Since 2017 he has won 22 matches out of 30 he has played indoors.
This will be his fourth appearance in Paris. He has gone out in the round of 16 on all the previous three attempts.

On the back of semi-final appearances at Antwerp Open and Brest Challenger, the young Frenchman secured his qualification in the season-ending ATP Next Gen Finals in Milan. Humbert has had an excellent campaign so far that he has seen him add two challenger titles to six that he won last year. He has also reached further three semi-finals at ATP events and the round of 16 at the Wimbledon.
The Frenchman has remarkably played more matches on indoor courts then he has played on any other surface. This season itself, he has played 26 matches on indoor surfaces, winning 19 of them.
This will be his third appearance in Paris with his first-round exit last year being his best showing so far.

On paper, the match is quite straight forward in favor of the Russian. Dimitrov was in the semi-finals of the US Open two months ago, whereas Humbert has been plying his trade mostly on the Challenger circuit.
But in reality, the matchup is much closer. Dimitrov has been extremely inconsistent in the last two months, and Humbert is on a high with two semi-final appearances in the previous fortnight.
Humbert knows the indoor conditions like the back of his hands, and it will give him a considerable advantage in this match. I can see an upset happening here.
