Swiss Indoors title winner Roger Federer has opted out of the 2019 Paris Masters in a bid to pace himself for the new season.
Federer, who defeated Alex de Minaur in the final of the Swiss Indoors on Sunday, admitted he was sad to be making that call but added he would be participating at the French Open next year.
The world number three said he was withdrawing,
“to make sure not to strain myself because I want to play as long as possible on the ATP Tour. I’m sorry for my French fans, I’ll see them next year at Roland Garros.”

Tournament director Guy Forget said the call to withdraw from the tournament this late was a disappointing one.
The Swiss maestro had said after his title win in Switzerland there was every chance of that happening.
He had said:
“My fitness is fine, I’m happy with how I feel. I just don’t know if I should play next week. I’ll figure it out with the team.”
Federer had featured in this competition last season after having given the Paris Masters a miss over the past two years. He had made it to the semi-finals before going down to Novak Djokovic in a three-set match. A lucky loser will come into the main draw in place of Federer.
Djokovic is the top seed at the Paris Masters and will kick-start the competition as a favourite despite his recent issues with form and health. He went out in the fourth round at the US Open because of an injury while getting dumped in the quarterfinal at the Shanghai Masters before this.
