Stan Wawrinka v Marin Cilic Head to Head
The pair have met no less than sixteen times before, with Wawrinka leading their head to head series by twelve matches to two. Cilic’s two victories came as far back as 2008 and 2010, whilst Wawrinka has won their last eight encounters, including their last meeting at Roland Garros in 2017.
Wawrinka, Fitness Doubts Again
Three times Grand Slam winner Wawrinka has had more than his fair share of injuries over the past few years. And, last week, he was forced to yet again withdraw from a tournament, pulling out of his quarter-final match-up with Roger Federer at the Swiss Indoors Championship with a back problem.
That put an end to a run that had shown signs of a return to form after he had reached the final of the European Open in Antwerp the previous week, losing to Andy Murray after leading by a set and a break.
That was only his second final of the year, having reached the same stage at Rotterdam in February, and was arguably the closest he has got in 2019 to adding to his haul of 16 senior ATP titles.

Can Cilic Turn a Disappointing Year Around?
Less than two years ago, Cilic was the number three ranked player in the world, having won his 18th and, to date, last career title earlier that year at the Queen’s Club. However, since then he has had major struggles with his form and has slipped out of the top twenty, although there is a modicum of satisfaction to be gained from the fact that he has overtaken Borna Coric once again to become the number one ranked Croat player.
His best result this year came just two weeks ago when he reached the semi-final in Moscow, only to lose to the eventual winner, Andrey Rublev of Russia. He also reached the quarter-final in Washington, where he was beaten by Daniil Medvedev.
Beaten in the first round in Basel last week, he at least successfully negotiated that stage on Monday, beating the Pole Hubert Hurkasz in straight sets, via a tie-break and a solitary break of serve in the second.
Wawrinka v Cilic Predictions & Tips
Wawrinka is the favourite to win this match at 7/10, whilst Cilic is priced at 61/50. Barring the Davis Cup this is likely to be the last tournament either man will play in 2019, and they will be keen to end what has been, for various reasons, a disappointing year for both on a high.
However, Wawrinka has a far superior head to head record, and, if his fitness problems allow, should win again.
Tip: Wawrinka to win in three sets: 3/1 at 888Sport
