John Isner v Christian Garin Head to Head
The pair have once before, at the Rogers Cup in Montreal in July, with Garin winning a second round match in straight sets.
Isner’s Season Affected by Injury
Isner’s 2019 has been impacted by the injury he sustained back in Miami in March, when trying to defend his Masters’ title in the final against Roger Federer.
As a result he missed the entire European clay court season and, although he returned in time for Wimbledon, he was beaten in the second round. He did win his 15th career title at Newport Beach, but then went on a run of tournaments – Atlanta, Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati – where he lost early in the event.
After reaching the third round at Flushing Meadows, he suffered another early exit in Chengdu, before bouncing back in Beijing, where he reachd the quarter-finals. The following week in Shanghia he reached the third round but, after losing then to Novak Djokovic, he has not played since.

Garin can put his feet up in a few weeks’ time after a largely successful year, having made 3 ATP finals, and winning two of them, the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston, and the Munich Open. It was no coincidence though that those results came in the first part of the season in clay court events, which is the surface on which he grew up playing.
Since tournaments have moved to faster, harder courts, he has been less successful, with his best result in recent months coming in Chengdu where he got to the quarter-finals.
He was beaten in the first round in Moscow, and again in Basel, but did get his campaign in Paris this year off to a good start on Monday in the first round, beating the Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas in straight sets.

Isner is the favourite to win this match at 5/6, whilst Garin is priced at 27/20. Whilst Garin won their only previous match this year on a hard court, he is more at home on clay, whereas this surface suits the American’s game better. If he can find some of his true form, he should have too much power on his serve and returns for the Chilean.
