Karen Khachanov v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head
In three previous encounters, Khachanov has won twice and lost once to Struff. Struff’s only win had come six years ago in a Challenger, but both of their previous couple of matches went to three sets and a gruelling final set allowed Khachanov to escape with a win. This includes one match at Halle earlier this year as well.
Three Titles Last Year for Khachanov, None This Time
Karen Khachanov’s not had a very good year and it’s a surprise he’s still managed to retain his number eight ranking in the world – his career-best. It could, however, come to head this week given he has 1000 points to defend after winning his first, and only, Masters title in Paris last year, and anything less than a deep run into this competition this season could pull him down the rankings.
Khachanov’s recent record on indoor courts isn’t much to write about either – he has lost more than he has won. Eight played, just three victories this year indoors, but the good news is those three wins have come in the last two weeks. Earlier, he had lost in the round one of three tournaments on this surface.
The Russian had a first round bye following his quarterfinal exit at Vienna and while he should start a favourite here, he will need to focus on form as recent as the last few weeks to feel any confidence.

Struff Stretched in Round One
After making it to the quarterfinals at the Swiss Indoors competition last week, Struff was a heavy favourite going up against Yoshihito Nishioka but dropped the first set before winning in three. Before Basel, however, Struff hadn’t won two matches in a row since Cincinnati, five tournaments ago.
In fact that’s how Struff’s season has gone, with the odd run to the third round of respective tournaments and then a string of early defeats. His best result came at Auckland very early this year, where he made it to the semifinal and followed it up with another last-four appearance at Stuttgart.
Looks like he will be up against it when he takes on Khachanov here.
