Verdasco leads the series 2-1, but they have not played each other since the 2017 French Open first round in which the Spaniard won in four sets.
No Room For Slip Up For Zverev
Alexander Zverev is jostling with at least six players still with a mathematical chance of making it to London’s season-ending finale next month. Zverev, who claimed the biggest title of his fledgling career at the English capital at the back end of last year is in the driver’s seat in a tightly congested Race To London.
However, things could take a turn for the worse should he produce another below par performance in his opener at the Paris Rolex Masters. The young German lost early in Basel to American Taylor Fritz last week and subsequently offered a lifeline to ninth-placed Roberto Bautista Agut, with just 325 points separating them.
The 22-year-old confessed about his first round loss at the Swiss city that he had suffered stomach problems a few days earlier. He later explained that he would focus solely on his results this week rather than hoping for his near rivals to lose in a bid to stamp his ticket at the Nitto ATP Finals. Zverev has won just one title this season, but he had found some form during the Asian swing, making a semifinal in Beijing and the final of the Shanghai Masters.
Veteran Verdasco Could Blow Race To London Wide Open
There would certainly be no better way to end the regular ATP season than with a few scalps to take away from. Should Fernando Verdasco inflict another defeat to Zverev on Tuesday night, things could get extremely interesting in the Race To London. At the moment, as many as seven players are in with a shout of claiming the final two spots, but none of those players include Verdasco.
The 35-year-old Spanish lefty who is currently ranked No.49 in the world has nothing to play for, but could be inspired by the last two winners of the Paris Masters. Both of the last two champions in Bercy were first time winners of Masters 1000 title. Jack Sock won in 2017 and Karen Khachanov against all odds, stunned World No.1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets last year.
Verdasco, now at the twilight on his tennis career, has not won a title in three years. And although stranger things can happen, it is a mighty long shot to pick him outright to win this weekend. But does the one-time Australian Open semifinalist hold the weapons to shoot down Zverev’s London-bound plane?
Alexander Zverev v Fernando Verdasco Predictions & Tips
Zverev says he is feeling very well both physically and mentally since his defeat to Fritz in Basel. Verdasco on the other hand, secured a fine win over Borna Coric on Monday nigh and that will put him in good stead to trade blows with the counter-punching baseline game of Zverev. With all things considered (including autumn form), the German should prevail in a tight three setter.
