Rafael Nadal v Adrian Mannarino Head to Head

In their only previous match, Rafael Nadal had eased past Adrian Mannarino at the China Open in 2016 in straight sets.

Nadal Back in Action after Break

This is the first tournament that Nadal will feature in as a married man, but it should not be too different for the very-focussed Spaniard who took just a day off after the wedding before returning back to practice. While it might not be the primary reason for that, Nadal has never won the title at the Paris Masters, and made it to the final just once before.

Both Novak Djokovic, who takes on Corentin Moutet, and Roger Federer, who ruled himself out of this tournament, have clinched title wins here and that is something Nadal would like to emulate too.

A lot has happened for Nadal since the US Open title win. There was that injury at Laver Cup that made it very difficult for Team Europe, but more vitally meant he played nothing between then and this tournament, other than his wedding. Of course, given his consistency and form even before that Laver Cup break, and the big prize at the end of it all – a potential world number one ranking – Nadal continues to remain the player to beat here.

Bitter-Sweet Year for Adrian Mannarino

Mannarino had no trouble getting past Casper Ruud in the opening round, winning 6-4, 6-2 but now comes the real challenge. In all probabilities, getting past Nadal would be a big mountain but a solid performance here should give the 43rd-ranked Mannarino a boost for the new season.

It’s been that kind of a year for the Frenchman. A win-loss record of 30-30 this season has been punctuated with one title win and two other finals at the highest level but other than those three tournaments he has won just 17 of his 45 matches played this season. Some fluctuations in form there!

The good news is Mannarino made it to the final at Moscow as recently as less than a fortnight ago and while there was that first round defeat at Vienna, he should be feeling good about himself. Issue for him, Nadal looks fit again and should have no worries here.
