Ashleigh Barty v Petra Kvitova Head to Head
Petra Kvitova has an overall 4-2 record against the World No. 1, but in 2019, the two have met on four occasions, with both sharing the spoils.
What’s more, all four of their meetings this year have been on Hard Courts and barring the one-sided quarterfinal at the Australian Open that Kvitova won in straight sets, each of the other three have been stamina-sapping three-set affairs.
While the Czech won the Sydney International final, Barty won two quarterfinals, one on the way to the Miami Open title, and another, earlier this month, enroute to the runner-up finish at the China Open.

Win will Take Barty Through
Naomi Osaka’s injury and alternate Kiki Bertens’ stunning come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Barty have thrown the group wide open, with all four players having a realistic chance of qualifying for the semifinal on the final day of the round robin matches for the Red Group on Thursday.
23-year-old Barty, making her debut in the WTA Finals, has found the going tough so far, having had to bounce back from a set down in the first match of the group phase to beat fellow debutant Belinda Bencic 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, before losing to the versatile Dutchwoman in three.
For Barty, who claimed her maiden grand slam at Roland Garros and her first premier mandatory title in Miami earlier this year before securing the year-end No. 1 ranking in this tournament, the equation is very simple: Win against Kvitova (whether in two or three sets) and secure a place in the semifinals. A straight-set defeat Thursday will see the former cricketer bow out of the tournament.
However, she will still have an outside chance if she loses in three to Kvitova and Bertens wins in three against Bencic. In that scenario, Bertens would win the group, while the player with the highest percentage of games won from the other three joining her in the semis.

Kvitova in a Must-Win Situation
To stay in the competition it is absolutely imperative for the 29-year-old Czech to win against Barty. A straight-set win will guarantee the second spot in the group for the 2019 Australian Open runner-up, but given the way the Kvitova-Barty duels have panned out this year, it seems this too will go the distance.
A three-set win for Kvitova, however, doesn’t guarantee her a place in the semis because if Bertens beats Bencic in three, then the percentage of games won tiebreak between Barty, Bencic and Kvitova will come into play.
Ashleigh Barty v Petra Kvitova Predictions & Tips
The World No. 1 wouldn’t want to end the tournament with mixed emotions. She has been in good form in the last leg of the 2019 WTA Tour, reaching semis in Wuhan and playing the final at the China Open, and would love to sign off in style in Shenzhen. Expect her to win in three.
