Gael Monfils v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

The pair have only met once on tour before. It was an epic five-setter a couple of months ago in the third round at the US Open. The Frenchman prevailed over the young Canadian in that encounter.

Monfils Continues His Impressive Run

Monfils has come back strongly after a minor blip in form after the US Open quarter-final run. He lost in the opening two rounds of four tournaments on the bounce. But a semi-final run at Vienna and two victories this week in front of his home crowd suggest that he is back in form. Now he is one win away from qualifying from the season-ending World Tour Finals in London.

This would be an incredible achievement for the Frenchman who has had a solid year so far but very little to show in terms of titles. He did win a title in Rotterdam and also reached four other semifinals but hasn’t been able to add to his eight career titles.

By reaching the last eight in Paris this week, he has already bettered his best-ever performance at his home masters. And with an impressive 24-5 win-loss record on indoor courts in the past two years, Monfils will fancy his chances to make it to the last four.

Shapovalov Takes Out Top 10 Player Zverev

The week started with a stroke of luck for the 20 year old Canadian as his first-round opponent Giles Simon retired in the first set due to a groin injury.

But since then, Shapovalov has shown great nerves and mental strength to beat two players ranked higher than him. He came through a tough three-setter against Fabio Fognini in the second round. In the round of 16, he overcame Alexander Zverev, the world number six in another three-set encounter.

His latest victory capped off an amazing fortnight for Shapovalov. He finally won his maiden title on the tour in Stockholm recently. This came after going out in the semifinals of seven tournaments consecutively. His recent run of good results also secured his place in the season-ending ATP Next Gen Finals in Milan.

Regardless of the result, the young Canadian will gain ranking points as he crashed out in the first round of Paris last year. With another victory, his chances of ending the season as the highest-ranked Canadian in the men’s circuit will increase. World number 19 and currently highest ranked Canadian on men’s tour, Felix Auger-Aliassime’s season ended last month after an ankle injury.

Gael Monfils v Denis Shapovalov Predictions & Tips
