Alex de Minaur v Miomir Kecmanovic Head to Head

The pair have never met before as seniors. This will be the first match between the two players separated by 42 places in the world rankings.

De Minaur Given a Fright by Davidovich Fokina

As the top seed and highest ranked player in the tournament, de Minaur started the week as the pre-tournament favourite, but any complacency that he had going into his opening match with the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was soon dispelled as he found himself in a real fight with his inexperienced Spanish opponent.

Things began well enough. He broke serve in the first game of the match, and held on to the break to take the first set. The second set though was a much tighter affair, and the Spaniard matched him blow for blow to force a tie-break. This time Davidovich Fokina got his nose in front, securing a mini-break with a topspin backhand, and then forcing three set points, the last of which he converted to level the match.

When de Minaur was then broken in the first game of the third set, last year’s beaten finalist was facing a potential upset. That though spurred him into action. He increased the speed of his shots and his movement around the court, and reeled off the next four games in a row to take the set.

Now completely in control, he clinched the fourth set for the loss of just one game.

Kecmanovic Out-Served Ruud

By contrast, Kecmanovic had a somewhat easier match against the Norwegian Casper Ruud, winning in straight sets in Tuesday, although that does not do full justice to how close the match was, with only one break of serve in regular play.

In the end it came down to who made the least unforced errors, and that proved to be Kecmanovic.

The first set was a close affair, with no man giving an inch until, at 4 – 4 in the tie-break, Ruud faltered from the baseline, handing Kecmanovic set points, one of which he finally took. The second followed a similar pattern, going to a tie-break, where Ruud took a 5 – 3 lead with a mini-break. However, Kecmanovic broke back with a powerful forehand, and then forced another error from the Norwegian to serve the set.

He then secured the one break of serve in the entire match which he duly consolidated to close out the contest.

De Minaur v Kecmanovic, Predictions & Tips

De Minaur is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 17/50, whilst Kecmanovic is priced at 109/50. The Serb has proved with his victory over Ruud that he is not to be underestimated, but de Minaur has had his wake-up call in this event already, and will not be taking him lightly.
