Frances Tiafoe v Mikael Ymer Head to Head

The pair have never met each other on tour before. This will be the first clash between the two.

Tiafoe Stops Losing Streak After Win Against Humbert

Going into his match against Ugo Humbert, Tiafoe had lost three back to back matches. One more loss would have meant that his season would have ended as he would have been knocked out of the tournament. But his four-set victory against the Frenchman means he still has a chance to salvage this week and reach the semi-finals for the first time in 43 tournaments.

Tiafoe started the year with an excellent run at the Australian Open. He reached the quarter-finals before bowing out to Rafael Nadal. He followed up that showing with another strong run at the Miami Open. Once again, he reached the last eight and beat top 10 player David Goffin on the way.

But his year since then has been a bit of a disappointment. He hasn’t managed to reach the last four at any event this year, and his win-loss record since Miami has been below par at 14-19.

He has struggled the most on the indoor courts, which is surprising considering the strong serve and a big forehand that he possesses. One of the reasons for that could be that he likes to set up his attacking shots by going big, and on the faster surfaces, he just doesn’t have enough time for that. He is currently world number 46 and the fifth seed at this event.

This is his second appearance at the event. Last year he lost two matches and went out of the group stages itself.

Ymer Has Had a Remarkable Break-out Year

For someone who started the year outside the top 250 ranking spots in the world, the steep rise in rankings to world number 73 has been remarkable. Ymer has won four challenger level titles this year and made it to the main draw of his first Grand Slam at the French Open. His fantastic rise has also meant that he is ranked higher than his brother, Elia Ymer, who currently is ranked at 123.

He is still very young, and his game is still developing. He doesn’t quite have the power to dominate the matches, but he uses his excellent court coverage and the ability to wear his opponent down to a great effect.

His victory against Frenchman Ugo Humbert was a classic example of the same. He has an excellent win-loss record of 15-4 this year on indoor surfaces. He found himself way short against the local boy Jannik Sinner and lost in straight sets. Ymer still has a chance to progress to the semi-finals with a victory against the American.

Frances Tiafoe v Mikael Ymer Predictions & Tips

Despite the American being the higher-ranked player in the match, Ymer starts the match as a slight favorite. Tiafoe has lacked consistency throughout the season. Despite having an ability to take down the best in the business on his day, his confidence seems to be very low at the moment. His victory against Humbert will help but consistency has been a problem for him throughout the year. Ymer, on the other hand, has had a remarkable year. Despite not having the power game like many other players, he uses his court coverage and pace to his advantage.
