Matteo Berrettini v Dominic Thiem Head to Head
The pair have played each other three times before, with Thiem leading their head-to-head series by two matches to one. Thiem won at Roland Garros last year, and in Vienna last month, whilst Berrettini won their match at the Shanghai Masters in October.
Berrettini Just Playing for Pride
Italian Berrettini can no longer qualify for the knock-out phases of this tournament, having already suffered two defeats, so all he has to play for now is pride.
He can though console himself with the fact that he gave a much better account of himself on Tuesday against Roger Federer than he had in his opening match with Novak Djokovic, when the occasion and the chance to play in such elite company had seemed to get the better of him.
Instead he matched Federer all the way in the first set, forcing a tie-break, but, when the number three seed stepped-up his intensity levels, Berrettini found it hard to cope, eventually surrendering the opening set.
He started the second set poorly, losing his opening service game but, at 4-3 had three break points to draw level. Ultimately though he squandered them all, and Federer produced an ace to seal the game. The Italian then lost his serve again, bringing the match to a rather tame end.

Thiem Stunned Djokovic to Book Semi-Final Place
Thiem is the first man in London to book his place in the semi-finals. After beginning his campaign with a straight sets win over Roger Federer on Sunday evening, the Austrian produced an even more impressive display on Tuesday to stun five-time winner Novak Djokovic in what was the best match of the tournament so far.
In a closely fought battle, nothing separated the men in the first set, but Djokovic just edged it on a tie-break. Thiem raised his game, broke the Djokovic serve early in the second set, and put the Serb on the back foot, with a series of inside-out forehands, and one-handed backhands.
The match went into a third set, and Thiem grabbed an early advantage with a service break, only to hand it back to his opponent, when he failed to serve out for the win. Trailing 4 -1 in the deciding tie-break, he rallied again, and forced a match point, which he converted when Djokovic’s forehand found the net.
That made him the first man to reach the semi-finals, in the process announcing himself as a major contender for the title on Sunday, having now beaten two of the “Big Three” in successive matches.
Berrettini v Thiem Predictions & Tips
Thiem is the clear favourite to win this match at 7/18, whilst Berrettini is priced at 53/21. Thiem having already reached the semi-final may be tempted to relax in this match, whilst Berrettini, with nothing left to pay for except pride, may be able to play with no inhibitions in this game. However, Thiem is playing at such a high level that he will not want to let his standards slip, and a win, at least on paper, gives him an easier match on Saturday.
