Stefanos Tsitsipas v Roger Federer Head to Head
The pair have played each other three times before, with all their meetings coming this year. Tsitsipas won in the last 16 of the Australian Open in Melbourne, but Federer avenged that defeat with victory at the Dubai open, and again in the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoor Championships.
Tsitsipas, Youngest Semi-Finalist at the ATP Finals
At 21, Tsitsipas is the youngest of the four semi-finalists but, although this is his first time in the ATP Finals, he is arguably playing better than anybody else in the tournament.
He began the week with a tight victory over the number four seed, Daniil Medvedev, which was significant in that it was the first time he had ever beaten the Russian. And then he confirmed his place in the last four by beating last year’s champion Alexander Zverev of Germany in straight sets.
In his last Group match on Friday, he took the first set off the number one seed, Rafael Nadal, but the Spaniard fought back with typical tenacity, and the Greek gradually wilted under a barrage of shots, who went on to clinch the match in the third set.
Federer Keeping His Hopes Alive for Seventh Title
Federer is 17 years older than Tsitsipas, and has the champion of winning the title here for the seventh time, extending his own record in the event. That all seemed a distant prospect on Sunday evening when he was beaten by Dominic Thiem in straight sets in his first Group game.
However, he rallied enough to beat Matteo Berrettini in his second match on Tuesday, battling to win a tight first set, and then easing away to victory in the second. Still, that meant to progress, he needed to do something he had not managed in four years, and that was to beat his old adversity Novak Djokovic.
And he fully rose to the challenge, barely making a single mistake, attacking the Serb at every opportunity, and serving superbly. He his 23 winners and made just five unforced errors, as he ended Djokovic’s hopes, not only in the tournament but also of finishing as the world number one.
Roger Federer v Stefanos Tsitsipas Predictions & Tips
Federer is the clear favourite to win this match at 4/11, whilst Tsitsipas is priced at 5/2. This match pits the youngest competitor in the tournament against the oldest, and while the Greek has arguably played the best tennis of all the players this week, Federer’s greater experience is likely to play the difference.
