Canada v Spain Predictions & Preview

2019 has seen the rise and resurgence of Canadian tennis, and there is no better way for them to end a successful season than facing hosts and Davis Cup powerhouse Spain for the 2019 Davis Cup title.

The Canadian team led by young Denis Shapovalov and resurgent Vasik Pospisil put up a stellar effort to defeat Australia and Russia in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. ‘Next Gen’ star Shapovalov has been in good form throughout the week performing constantly in both singles and doubles.

Pospisil returning to tennis this year after a long injury lay-off has gone from strength to strength and looked in fine touch, and partnered Shapovalov in pulling off some crucial deciding doubles wins.

Moving to a career-high number 15 in the ATP rankings, Shapovalov has displayed exuberance and confidence, and will be looking for a strong showing and favorable result on Sunday, to end a good year on a positive note.

Hosts Spain, led by world number one Rafael Nadal continued their strong run in the tournament defeating Great Britain in the semi-finals. For a second day in a row, it was down to the deciding doubles for Spain and the experience of Nadal and Feliciano Lopez did not let them down when it mattered.

With Roberto Bautista Agut who played a crucial role in the other singles match, having to leave due to the demise of his father, Pablo Carreno Busta and Feliciano Lopez have stepped in to play the singles matches in his place. While Busta and Lopez have not particularly met with a lot of success in their singles encounters thus far, Nadal has more than compensated winning all his singles matches very convincingly going into the final.

An intriguing final day of the Davis Cup awaits to wrap up what despite the different critics has been a success of a tournament and promises to get better by the next version. Despite his strong run of form, Shapovalov will have his work cut out for him for his singles match against Nadal. With Nadal an  overwhelming favorite for his singles,

Canada will need Pospisil and the doubles combination of Pospisil and Shapovalov to win both the remaining matches. Playing at home, with Lopez in fair form to assist and/or partner Nadal, it seems  difficult to envision Canada winning two out of three matches. Expect Nadal and Lopez to win the Davis Cup for Spain with some degree of comfort and predictability.
